Workplace Violence Prevention in General Industry
Workplace violence includes threats or acts of physical violence at work and is a serious concern for employers and workers. The latest data shows in 2021, 57 working people died from acts of workplace violence in California. In the U.S., an average of 1.3 million nonfatal violent crimes in the workplace occurred annually from 2015 to 2019. For further details see Indicators of Workplace Violence, 2019 (published 2022).
Cal/OSHA is developing a new regulation on Workplace Violence Prevention that will apply to most workplaces in California.
The regulation is currently being drafted based on input from two public meetings and two rounds of written comments detailed below. The newest draft will be discussed at another meeting in 2023. To receive updates and provide feedback on the draft regulation, email Principal Safety Engineer Kevin Graulich at KGraulich@dir.ca.gov
