Disability Evaluation Unit

The Disability Evaluation Unit (DEU) determines permanent disability ratings by evaluating medical descriptions of physical and mental impairment. The determinations are used by workers' compensation administrative law judges, injured workers and insurance claims administrators to determine permanent disability benefits. The DEU prepares three types of ratings:

  • Formal, done at the request of a workers' compensation judge
  • Consultative, done on litigated cases at the request of an attorney or DWC information and assistance officer
  • Summary, done on non-litigated cases at the request of a claims administrator or injured worker

Disability Rating Determinations describe your percentage of disability. This percentage is based on a physician report and on the type of work you were doing at the time of your injury. If the rating indicates that you have some permanent disability, you should receive permanent disability payments, less any permanent disability payments made to you prior to the rating.

For questions about the status of a request for summary rating determination, please contact your local DEU office listed below.

All Division of Workers’ Compensation district offices are open. Per DWC’s September 1, 2021, newsline, as of October 1, 2021, trials, lien trials, expedited hearings, and SAU trials will resume in person at all DWC district offices.

DWC will continue to telephonically hear all mandatory settlement conferences, priority conferences, status conferences, SAU conferences, and lien conferences via the individually assigned judges’ conference lines.

Walk-throughs will continue in the Lifesize walkthrough courtrooms until further notice.

If you are experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19 including fever, cough, shortness of breath, or if you are feeling ill, please do not come to a DWC office. You may contact your attorney or email the district office. Refer to the district office page for email and other contact information.

The Eureka office is permanently online as of July 1. All hearings are held by conference call.

Alternative filing during COVID-19

  • In light of the continued state of emergency in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and to facilitate other methods of filing in line with the newslines issued on April 3 and April 28, and pursuant to the WCAB’s en banc order issued on April 6, documents subject to a statutory time limit may be sent by e-mail directly to the district offices pursuant to AD Rule 10205.7(c) where the filing party could not otherwise e-file, JET file or file the document by mail. Refer to the district office page for e-mail and other contact information.
