The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has announced the Biden-Harris Administration recently announced the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for a second round of the Apprenticeship Building America (ABA2) grant program. The second round of the ABA2 makes $95 million available to expand registered apprenticeships.
ABA2 provides funding for three categories of grants:

  1. Ensuring Equitable RAP Pathways and Partnerships Through Pre-apprenticeship Leading to Registered Apprenticeship Programs Enrollment.
  2. Creation of Education System-aligned Pre-apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs)
  3. Registered Apprenticeship Hubs.

The alignment of Governor Newsom’s Career Education Master Plan and the DOL’s efforts underscore the national recognition of leveraging registered pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship as key to workforce development while ensuring that people from underrepresented and underserved communities have onramps to high-paying and fulfilling career paths that don’t require college degrees.
