Cal/OSHA - Title 8 regulations - Index
The Index to the Cal/OSHA Regulations
When searching for a single word, enter that word in the search box above.
When searching for multi-word phrases use quotation marks, e.g. "pile driving" & "fall protection". However, it is recommended that you start your search with one of the words in the phrase; you then may elect to narrow the search when a large number of unwanted references are found.
Search for singular and plural forms of words by using separate searches since many words appear in both forms.
Search for words with the same prefix by using quotes and a trailing asterisk, e.g. type "rail*" to find rail, rails, railing, railroad.
Search for multiple exact individual words by using "and", "or" and "not", e.g. asbestos and (laundering or clothing) and not operations.

About the Title 8 Index:
The Safety Orders in Chapter 4 are organized by industry, process and equipment specific subchapters. With a few exceptions the General Industry Safety Orders (GISO) in Subchapter 7 establishes minimum occupational safety & health standards that apply to all places of employment in California. Additional industry, occupation or equipment specific safety orders are located in 14 other subchapters. Safety Orders in these subchapters that address like conditions and hazards will take precedence over the safety orders in the GISO wherever they are inconsistent with the General Industry Safety Orders.
In addition to the safety orders in the 15 subchapters, the index identifies the Agricultural Safety Orders (AgSO) which apply to all agricultural operations in California. The AgSOs have been identified in the index in order to aid the Agricultural Industry in establishing basic safety programs in one of California’s more dangerous Industries. In addition to the AgSo’s, the agricultural employer’s safety program must be augmented by compliance with other safety orders unique to the employer’s place of employment or worksite.
The index references the occupational safety and health standards in Chapter 4 (Safety Orders) of the California Code of Regulations (CCR) that are enforced by the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Division). In addition to the Title 8 worker safety and health standards the index includes references to a limited number of Cal/OSHA Program administrative requirements in Chapters 3.2, 3.3, and 3.5 such as posting, certification and registration requirements.
To help the index user select the applicable safety orders the referenced section number is preceded by the acronym of the subchapter in which the requirement is located. For example, the inset below shows fall protection requirements for construction operations in CSO, Section 1669. The CSO indicates that Section 1669 is located in the Construction Safety Orders. Likewise the general requirement for fall protection is located in Section 3210 of the General Industry Safety Orders or GISO. A link to the acronyms used in the index is located at the top of the index page.
The index includes common terms and words that may not be found in the safety orders and will identify the regulatory language as well as terms used in the standard. For example; the word “forklift” is identified as “industrial truck” in the safety orders, similarly, “mushroom cap” is identified as “impalement protection” in the DIR safety orders.
The index can be browsed by selecting the first letter of the desired entry or a word search may be selected by typing in the desired word and searching all of the text contained in the index.
