HEALTH AND SAFETY, Spring 1997

Environmental Technology
(Formerly Environmentally Hazardous Materials Technology)
A two-year degree or certificate program leading to an advanced degree or a career in government, private industry, consulting, and various fields that manage hazardous materials and waste. More than 250 such industries were surveyed and 78% indicated a need for additional hiring of persons trained at the certificate level or higher in hazardous materials/waste management in the next three years.
Environmental Technology (ET) is a program designed to provide training for entry-level technicians who will be involved with environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and workplace safety and health applications.
Graduates may be employed by businesses and governmental agencies which require a knowledge of hazardous materials' handling practices, techniques for storage, treatment, transport, and disposal, and a basic understanding of the chemical and biological phenomena which underlie the regulation of hazardous material operations.
The Environmental Technology Program uses a CD-ROM program, Enflex, to access State and Federal Regulations pertaining to hazardous materials. This is a service that is updated on a monthly basis. The regulations are the vital part of each of the courses in the ET program.

Major requirements for the Associate in Science Degree:

BIOL 10 Concepts in Biology (3 units)
BIOL 15 Science, Nature, and Human Values (3 units)
ET 10 Introduction to Environmental Technology (3 units)
ET 11 Hazardous Waste Generation/Reduction/Treatment (3 units)
ET 13 Health Effects of Environmentally Hazardous Materials (3 units)
ET 15 Hazardous Waste Management Applications (4 units)

Requirements for the Environmental Technology Certificate:
Same as major and Required General Education above.
Environmental Technology refers to the knowledge and skills required to work with hazardous materials in compliance with government regulations while at the same time protecting human health and the environment.
The ET Certificate is designed to prepare students or upgrade skills of working individuals.
A minimum grade of C is required for all courses required for the certificate.
