DIR Honors Employees Awarded Governor’s Medal of Valor
Oakland—Department of Industrial Relations’ Director Katie S. Hagen commends three team members who were awarded the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor Award.
Karla Castro, Camille Morgan and Cristi Valencia of the Division of Workers’ Compensation’s Long Beach district office have been honored for attempting to save a colleague who collapsed on September 15, 2021. Castro, Morgan and Valencia administered first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived, but the employee tragically passed away.
“I’m pleased these three team members have been acknowledged by the Governor for their heroic efforts to save a life,” said Director Hagen. “They quickly acted and worked together to help their colleague. The department thanks them and is proud to have them as part of our team.”
The State of California is honoring 33 state employees with the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor Award for acts of heroism. The Medal of Valor Award is the highest honor given by the State to its employees.
Castro, Morgan and Valencia received the Special Service Award for an act of heroism by a state employee extending above and beyond the normal call of duty or service performed at personal risk to his or her safety to save human life or state property.
Director Hagen will meet with the awardees in Long Beach on December 14, 2022, to present them with their medals of valor.
