Independent Bill Review (IBR) decisions
Independent Bill Review (IBR), an important element of the Senate Bill 863 California Workers’ Compensation reform, provides a quick, efficient way to resolve disputes over medical treatment and medical-legal billing. The IBR process is used when a medical provider disagrees with the amount paid by a claims administrator on a bill and applies to all services where the fee is determined by a fee schedule adopted by the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC).
The DWC administers the IBR process. Final decisions are made by billing experts assigned by an independent bill review organization (IBRO) designated by DWC. (Currently, the IBRO is Maximus Federal Services, Inc.) All IBR decisions are posted on DWC’s website shortly after being issued. IBR decisions that are withdrawn or determined to be ineligible are not posted.
