Mitch Steiger Elected 2024 Chair of the California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation

OAKLAND - The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) is pleased to announce the unanimous election of Commissioner Mitch Steiger as the Chair of the Commission for 2024. The election was held at the December 8, 2023 public CHSWC meeting held online.

Steiger is a legislative representative for the California Federation of Teachers (CFT). The CFT is a union of educators and classified professionals affiliated with the 1.7-million-member American Federation of Teachers, and through it with the AFL-CIO. Steiger’s role is to advocate on behalf of CFT member educators and classified professionals in a variety of issue areas by introducing and lobbying for passage of union-sponsored bills.

Steiger has been with the California Federation of Teachers since 2023, and prior to that served as an advocate for the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO since 2010. The California Labor Federation, representing over 2.1 million workers statewide, fights to defend and improve the wages, benefits and working conditions of all Californians. He is a member of the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521, CWA.

CHSWC, created by the workers' compensation reform legislation of 1993, is charged with examining the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. CHSWC was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases and to examine those programs in other states.
