Firefighter Respiratory Protection Technical Advisory Committee Advisory Meetings

(via Zoom)

Cal/OSHA Firefighter Respiratory Protection Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)

The Firefighter Respiratory Protection Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) will focus initially on Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI)/Wildland respiratory protection, drawing from NFPA 1984 (2022 version), Standard on Respirators for Wildland Fire-Fighting and Wildland Urban Interface Operations. The TAC will develop draft regulatory language for a new Cal/OSHA standard to protect firefighters from inhalation exposures during WUI/Wildland deployments. This rulemaking is Cal/OSHA’s top priority for firefighter safety and health.

After completing rulemaking for WUI/Wildland respiratory protection, the TAC will initiate rulemaking to update other respiratory protection elements of Cal/OSHA’s firefighter PPE regulations, drawing on several NFPA standards, including:

  • NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety, Health, and Wellness Program
  • NFPA 1982, Standard on Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS)
  • NFPA 1852, Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
  • NFPA 1981, Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for Emergency Services
