Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) & California Interpreters

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) is recognized by the State of California's Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) as an approved credentialing and certification organization. CCHI is committed to work with California interpreters to accelerate the credentialing and certification process. For the next two months, CCHI is expediting it's systems to ensure that you can get through the credentialing and certification process quickly and without delay.

Getting started:

Interpreters in all languages EXCEPT Arabic, Mandarin and Spanish

An interpreter can apply for and receive CCHI's Associate Healthcare Interpreter™ (AHI™) credential in as little as three weeks.

Here are the necessary steps:

  1. Submit an application at https://cchi.learningbuilder.com and pay your application fee.
  2. Within one week, you will receive notification of your eligibility. Upon receiving confirmation of your eligibility, log back into your profile, pay your AHI™ written examination fee and then click the orange "submit for scheduling" button. You can login to your profile at https://cchi.learningbuilder.com.
  3. Within one week of paying your examination fee, you will receive a Notice to Schedule email. The email will provide a phone number for you to call and schedule to take your AHI™ written examination. The AHI™ exam is offered every day of the week at 17 sites throughout the state.
  4. When you take the examination, you will receive notice of your score at the test center. If you pass the examination, the unofficial score report you receive at the test center should be sufficient to meet the requirements to be eligible for reimbursement. You will receive official notification within a few weeks of passing your examination and your name will be listed in our National Healthcare Interpreter Registry.

Interpreters in Arabic, Mandarin and Spanish

An interpreter can apply for and receive CCHI's Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (CHI™) certification in as little as two months.

The CHI™ oral examination will be offered during the following testing windows in 2014: January 28 - February 15, April 23 - May 14, July 21 - August 9, and October 20 - November 8. Please note you must pass the AHI™ written examination before taking the CHI™ oral examination. To ensure you are ready for your preferred testing window, CCHI strongly suggests you apply as soon as possible.

Here are the necessary steps:

  1. Submit an application at https://cchi.learningbuilder.com and pay your application fee.
  2. Within one week, you will receive notification of your eligibility. Upon receiving confirmation of your eligibility, log back into your profile, pay your AHI™ written examination fee and then click on the orange "submit for scheduling" button. You can login to your profile at https://cchi.learningbuilder.com.

  4. Within two weeks of passing your AHI™ written examination, you will receive official notification of passing your examination. Upon receiving notification of passing, log back into your profile, pay your CHI™ oral examination fee and then click the orange "submit for scheduling" button.
  5. Within one week of paying your CHI™ oral examination fee, you will receive a new Notice to Schedule email specific to the CHI™ examination and can contact test centers to schedule your oral examination. The oral examination will be offered in 2014 at sites throughout the state during the following testing windows: January 28 - February 15, April 23 - May 14, July 21 - August 9, and October 20 - November 8.
  6. You will receive your official score report by the end of November. If you pass, you will be certified and eligible to receive reimbursement and your name will be listed in our National Healthcare Interpreter Registry.
