OAKLAND — The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation (CHSWC) today announced the appointment of Mitch Steiger to the Commission.
A total of eight (8) Commissioners are appointed by the Governor and the Legislature. Labor Code 75 establishes that two of the employer members and two of the labor members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Governor for a sub-total of four (4) members. The Senate Committee on Rules and the Speaker of the Assembly shall each appoint one employer and one labor representative for a sub-total of four (4) members.
Mitch Steiger is a legislative advocate for the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. The California Labor Federation, representing over 2.1 million workers statewide, fights to defend and improve the wages, benefits and working conditions of all Californians. Mr. Steiger’s role is to advocate on behalf of workers in a variety of issue areas, including occupational health and safety as well as workers’ compensation, and he participated in the stakeholder discussions that produced Senate Bill 863.
Mr. Steiger has been with the California Labor Federation since 2010, and prior to that served as researcher/organizer for United Food & Commercial Workers Local 21 and legislative advocate for the Washington State Building & Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO. He is a member of the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521, CWA.
CHSWC is charged with examining the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. The Commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational illnesses and to examine those programs in other states.
