Effective Training Steps

3. Plan the Training and Organize Materials

Types of Teaching Techniques and Learning Activities

Use interactive exercises, thinking and open- ended questions, and feedback to make passive training more active. Active training improves learning and retention of the material. Active learning is especially important with adults who bring their own experiences, knowledge, and information to share with the group if they feel safe and are encouraged to do so. Make sure to include time for questions, review, and feedback.

Not all individuals learn in the same way. Some individuals learn best by seeing information, others by hearing information, and others from "hands on" demonstrations and exercises. To engage as many learners as possible it is best to vary the methods used to present information. Types of Teaching Techniques and Learning Activities include:

  • Oral Presentations
  • Power Point or other Slide Presentations
  • Small Group Discussions
  • Thinking and Open- Ended Questions
  • Tailgate/Toolbox Safety Meetings
  • Assignments with Students Presenting Results
  • Brainstorming Sessions
  • Role Playing (employees act out)
  • Case Studies (descriptions of real life workplace problems and solutions)
  • Games
  • Demonstrations of Safe Work and the Safe Use of Tools and Equipment (by the trainer followed by employees)
