

Mitch Steiger Reappointed to the California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation and Re-elected as 2025 Chair
OAKLAND - The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) is pleased to announce the reappointment of Commissioner Mitch Steiger. Commissioner Steiger was reappointed by the Senate Rules Committee on March 12, 2025 and his term runs through December 2028. Steiger will continue serving as a labor representative.
Commissioner Steiger was also unanimously reelected to serve as the Chair of the Commission for 2025. The election was held at the February 28, 2025 public CHSWC meeting.
Steiger is a legislative representative for the California Federation of Teachers (CFT). The CFT is a union of educators and classified professionals affiliated with the 1.7-million-member American Federation of Teachers. Steiger has been with the California Federation of Teachers since 2023. Prior to that, he served as an advocate for the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, since 2010. The California Labor Federation represents over 2.1 million workers statewide and fights to defend and improve the wages, benefits and working conditions of Californians. He’s also a member of the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521, Communications Workers of America (CWA).
A total of eight (8) commissioners are appointed by the Governor and the legislature. Labor Code 75 establishes that two of the employer members and that two of the labor members of the commission shall be appointed by the Governor for a sub-total of four (4) members. The Senate Committee on Rules and the Speaker of the Assembly shall each appoint one employer and one labor representative for a sub-total of four (4) members. CHSWC, created by the workers' compensation reform legislation of 1993, is charged with examining the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. CHSWC was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases and to examine those programs in other states.
