SAN FRANCISCO -- The Senate confirmed Stephen J. Smith, Monday, as Director of the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). This follows the Senate Rules Committee recommendation on Wednesday, February 24, that Smith be confirmed. As Director, Smith is a member of the Governor's Cabinet, the state designee for the Cal/OSHA Program, the Administrator of Apprenticeship and an ex-officio member of the State Compensation Insurance Fund Board of Directors.
"I look forward to returning the Department's priorities to enforcing basic wage, occupational safety and workers' compensation laws, as well as expanding opportunities for workers and employers through apprenticeship training and consultation programs," said Smith. Smith was appointed as Director of the Department of Industrial Relations by Governor Davis and assumed that position on January 4, 1999. Prior to this appointment Smith served as deputy campaign manager for the Governor's gubernatorial campaign and had previously worked on his staff when Gray Davis was Lieutenant Governor.
Smith has an extensive background in public sector labor relations, having spent over nine years as a government relation's administrator for the California State Employees Association. He has also managed several successful ballot measure campaigns in California on behalf of organized labor.
