ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

Introduction to Environmental Hazardous Materials Technology
EHMT 20 (3 units)
This course provides an introduction into the entire spectrum of the hazardous materials and hazardous wastes field. It includes a review of the laws, enforcement agencies and regulations at the Federal and state local levels. It also includes discussion on the chemistry of hazardous materials, basic toxicology, the condification of laws and regulations, and an introduction into the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, air pollution permitting and control rules, management of hazardous wastes, emergency business plans, and hazardous materials transportation. Types of training, professional certifications and registrations, and job and career opportunities are also covered.

Hazardous Waste Generation/Reduction/Treatment
EHMT 30 (3 units)
This course is a study of industrial process and their generation of waste streams in seven selected industries: electroplating, metal finishing and printed circuit board production, general manufacturing, printing and graphic reproduction, agriculture and consumer services. The course will center on various raw materials and chemicals used in industry, examining the changes that occur as they move through the industrial process, and understanding the material balance concept of inventory. Throughout the course , discussion of applicable regulations will be included , and the importance of waste minimization/treatment concepts will be stressed. Home hazardous waste generation and reduction will also be considered.

Health Effects of Hazardous Materials
EHMT 40 (3 units)
This course presents principles of environmental toxicology and industrial hygiene. Topics include types of acute and chronic health effects, permissible exposure limits, medical surveillance, using material safety data sheets, and control methods for reducing exposure. Medical wastes, pesticides, ionizing radiation and indoor air quality are also covered.

Hazardous Waste Management Applications
EHMT 60 (4 units)
This course provides an overview of hazardous waste regulation with emphasis in generator compliance, site investigation and remediation, permitting, enforcement, and liability. The lecture portion of the course explains the hazardous waste regulatory framework, introduces the student to the wide variety and types of enviromnetal resources available, and develops research skills in the hazardous waste area. The laboratory portion of the course complements the lectures by providing "hands-on" application of the regulations at the technician level. Proper methods of preparing a hazardous waste manifest, labeling of storage containers, sampling and analysis, preparing a Phase I Environmental Audit, and selecting environmental consultants are among the many skills developed in the laboratory.

Safety and Emergency Response
EHMT 70 (4 Units)
This course provides "hands=on" instruction in safety and emergency response to chemical and physical exposures in industrial and field settings. Topics will include: hazard analysis, contingency planning, housekeeping and safety practices including the proper use and selection of PPE. In addition, site control and the proper use of instruments will be covered. Also incident response planning, emergency response (including field exercises in the use of APR and SCBA equipment), and an understanding of the ICS system will be covered. Successful passing of CSTI exams lead to certifications in first responder operations level; scene manager; and 40-hour hazardous waste operations.
