The NSCSA Certificate of Recognition recognizes companies who have implemented a successful safety program. Many companies and organizations in Nova Scotia require the Certificate of Recognition as part of their tendering (of a contract) process. ISRAEL

� The Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene, Training Department, www.osh.org.il/site/english_info.htm#_Training_Deparment "develops, initiates and organizes various training activities for workers employed in the industrial, agricultural, and construction sectors, in accordance with the ISO 9002 requirements." (taken from website) The Training Department plans and implements OSH training events, develops and produces OSH training kits and electronic products and operates and maintains computerized training facilities. In addition, the Department has mobile training units that deliver onsite worker training in seven languages to industrial plants and construction sites. They offer computer-aided training classes in Tel Aviv and Haifa and a noise and hearing protection hands-on experience laboratory. The Department also provides guidance and methodological support to local Institute branches to assist them with their training activities. Training events are typically three to 30 daylong courses, one-day seminars, workshops and lectures. According to their website, IIOSH reaches 87,000 workers annually through their workplace health and safety training events.

 

 

 

 

 


JAPAN

� The Japan Industrial Safety and Health Association (JISHA), www.jisha.or.jp/english/index.html is a membership-based entity consisting of business groups. As one of its tasks, JISHA offers safety and health education through several different methods. An annual National Industrial Safety and Health Convention is held, with over 10,000 participants from safety and health-related fields. In addition, JISHA presents a seminar on cruise ship entitled "Safety and Health Ship." The seminar program’s objectives are to provide the latest in safety and health information, instruction in practical ways to handle outstanding issues and encourage personal exchange between various industrial sectors. JISHA has also designed safety and health seminars for top management, safety and health experts and employers of small and medium-sized businesses. And finally, JISHA operates two Occupational Safety and Health Education Centers (JICOSH) in Tokyo and Osaka.   Students who complete the courses offered become safety and health instructors for newly assigned foremen whose responsibilities include workplace safety and health.

JICOSH presents approximately ten, three-week long safety and health seminars annually. Approximately a dozen invitees are included in each seminar. Invitees include managerial personnel from Asian countries who bear the responsibility for safety and health in companies who employ them. JICOSH’s purpose is to transfer Japanese-developed safety and health technologies to developing countries. Training includes visits to and practical training at major Japanese companies, plants and research laboratories including lectures in English and exchange of information.

There are a variety of training centers certified by the State Labour Inspector. The only topics of training courses were referred to as "special topics." OSH also has an online training module for youths entitled, Dr. Aargh Website for Youth, www.osh.dol.govt.nz/kidz/index.html .  It includes sections on: Common Hazards in the Farming Industry, A Teenager’s Guide to the Health and Safety in Employment Act of 1992, an Information Kit for use by teachers in schools produced by the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (CTU), a section entitled, "What if I get Hurt," and another entitled, "Little Workshop of Horrors" that includes diseases or accidents from "A" to "Z", some with graphic pictures. Finally, the student can take an online computer generated quiz. If the student scores 70% or better they receive a certificate from the Minister of Labour.

SPAIN

They offer specific training classes for workers as well as Train the Trainer (Training of Monitors) classes. For the specific training needs they offer 30 and 50-hour versions of their classes. They also offer classes for experts in the fields of Safety at Work, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Medicine, Ergonomics and Applied Psychosociology. SWEDEN

� Teacher Training, www.niwl.se/skola/socrates based in Sweden, is a web-based course for vocational teachers. It is a European partnership, with the objective to increase cooperation between educational organizations and institutions operating in the field of occupational health and safety. It seeks to use distance (on line) education. The course consists of eight themes and a project. Each theme is expected to take three to eight weeks. There are a number of references for each section, which are linked to the text. Most sections also include interviews with scientists working in the subject area. The interviews are mini-lectures of a sort, and present the latest � usually not yet published � research results. The course is worth ten college credits. A certificate is awarded at the completion of the course.
