Aerial Devices
Aerial devices, such as cherry pickers and boom trucks, may
be vehicle-mounted or self-propelled and used to position
employees. 3637
A. General safety requirements are as follows: 3648
- Only authorized persons may operate aerial devices. 3648(c)
- Aerial devices must not rest on any structure. 3648(a)
- Controls must be tested before use. 3648(b)
- Workers must stand only on the floor of the basket. No
planks, ladders, or other means are allowed to gain greater
heights. 3648(e)
- A fall protection system must be worn and attached to
the boom or basket. 3648(o)
- Brakes must be set when employees are elevated. 3648(g)
- An aerial lift truck must not be moved when an employee
is on the elevated boom platform except under conditions
listed in 3648(l).
B. The following information must be displayed on the device:
3638(c)
- Manufacturers name, model, and serial number
- Rated capacity
- Operating instructions
- Cautions and restrictions
- Load chart, if applicable
C. Devices must be designed to applicable American National
Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. 3638(b)
