Len Welsh
Chief
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Len Welsh chief of DOSH on October 12, 2007. Mr. Welsh served as acting chief since 2003.
Len Welsh began his career with the division in 1980 as
a graduate student assistant in the director's office performing policy
analysis. In 1981, Len joined the law firm of Kazan and McClain in Oakland.
Len returned to the Department of Industrial Relations in 1986 to work
for the division's legal unit as legal counsel. He resigned at the time
of the Cal/OSHA disengagement in 1987 to go back into private law practice.
During the disengagement period, Len actively worked for the restoration
of the Cal/OSHA program. He returned to the Division in 1990 as staff counsel, and was promoted to Special Counsel in 1994 and Deputy Chief for Health and Engineering Services in 1999.
Mr. Welsh holds a bachelor of arts degree in sociology
and Spanish from Rutgers University, master of science degree in environmental
health sciences from the University of California at Berkeley School
of Public Health, and a juris doctor degree from the University of California
Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.
