Preguntas Que Se Hacen Con Mās Frecuencia Sobre La Semana Laboral De "40 Horas" De California

DIR Posts Spanish Translation of Overtime Fact Sheet on Web Site

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Department of Industrial Relations has posted information about California's overtime rules in Spanish on the DIR web site at The fact sheet, in a Q&A format, addresses the changes in overtime regulations that went into effect earlier this year and explores the incentives to employers to offer flexible hours to their employees.

"By providing information on overtime in Spanish we hope to reach employees and employers who may not have been aware of the new overtime regulations," said John C. Duncan, Director of the Department of Industrial Relations. "These changes provide benefits for many California hourly workers and their employers who desire flexible work schedules but were stalled due to the previous restrictions."

The changes, which affect five of the 15 Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Orders, require employers to provide premium pay to employees for time worked in excess of 40 hours in a week, rather than after eight hours in a day. According to a study by the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, most overtime hours reported in California are those worked in excess of 40 hours in a week. The study indicated that many employers were averse to permitting longer days and shorter work weeks because of the high daily cost. The change in overtime rules may help to eliminate that objection, and provide more incentive to employers to permit flexible scheduling.

The Spanish language fact sheet can be downloaded from the Department of Industrial Relation's web site and printed for distribution.
