The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation
Announces the 2007 Young Worker Leadership Academy in Northern California

Oakland -- The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) is pleased to announce that the second 2007 Young Worker Leadership Academy will be held in Los Angeles February 8, 9, and 10, 2007. The first 2007 Academy was held in Berkeley on January 18, 19, and 20, 2007. The Academy will provide a leadership development opportunity for small teams of three or four high schools students from different communities in Northern California to focus on young worker health and safety. The goals of the Academy are to:

The Young Worker Leadership Academy is part of the Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP) administered by CHSWC. It has been jointly developed by the University at California at Berkeley's Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) and the University of California at Los Angeles' Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program, in consultation with the California Center for Civic Participation, a national leader in the area of youth development and youth governance. Academy sponsors include: CHSWC; the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, a statewide task force made up of government agencies and other organizations that can play a role in protecting and education California’s young workers; the California Wellness Foundation; and Employers’ Direct Insurance Company.

CHSWC is charged with overseeing the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. The Commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational illnesses and to examine those programs in other states.
