CHSWC Releases Updated Guidebook for Injured Workers
OAKLAND -- The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC), has released an updated version of "Workers' Compensation in California: A Guidebook for Injured Workers, Third Edition, November 2006." This guidebook was designed and produced by the Institute of Industrial Relations (IIR), University of California at Berkeley, and the Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP), Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley, under a contract with CHSWC. It is based on educational fact sheets, prepared in 1998 and 2000, and the first and second editions of this guidebook, prepared in 2002 and 2005.
The guidebook gives an overview of the California workers' compensation system and incorporates information from the booklet "Getting Appropriate Medical Care for Your Injury." It is meant to help workers with job injuries understand their basic legal rights, the steps to take to request workers' compensation benefits, and where to seek further information and help if necessary. The updated guidebook describes the workers' compensation system as of November 2006.
CHSWC, created by the workers' compensation reform legislation of 1993, is charged with overseeing the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. CHSWC was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases and to examine those programs in other states.
