The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation Approves Report on Self Insurance Groups

OAKLAND  -- The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) has approved the Report on Self Insurance Groups to submit to Assembly Member Coto’s office and for final release and posting. The report was prepared in response to the October 6, 2008 request by Assembly member Joe Coto, Chair of the Assembly Insurance Committee that CHSWC analyze the statutory and regulatory oversight of workers’ compensation self insurance groups (SIGs) and make recommendations to ensure the viability of these programs. This report finds that California already has substantial protections in place, but further improvements can strengthen the program, and statutory and regulatory changes are recommended.

CHSWC is charged with examining the health and safety and workers’ compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation.  The Commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers’ compensation system and of the state’s activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational illnesses and to examine those programs in other states.

Information about the Report on Self Insurance Groups and CHSWC is available at www.dir.ca.gov/chswc and by writing to the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation, 1515 Clay Street, Room 901, Oakland, CA 94612, by calling (510) 622-3959, by faxing a request to (510) 622-3265, or by emailing chswc@dir.ca.gov.
