SHARPS INJURY PREVENTION AMENDMENTS
TO SECTION 5193, BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS FINALIZED
In accordance with Assembly Bill 1208 (Statute of 1998, Chapter 999), an emergency standard to prevent sharps injuries was adopted by the Standards Board on January 14, 1999. The amendments to existing Title 8 CCR Section 5193, Bloodborne Pathogens required employers to comply with the new sharps injury prevention requirements by July 1, 1999.
The emergency standard was approved by the Office of Administrative Law on January 22,
1999 and became effective on that date. The emergency standard was temporary and
replaced by a permanent standard through our normal public hearing and rulemaking
process. Click Here to access the proposed permanent
standard and it's supporting documents that concluded the public hearing process on
February 18, 1999. In response to public comments received during the process, minor
changes were made to the original proposal and the final proposal was adopted on June 17,
1999.

was approved by the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) on July 30, 1999 and is now
permanently in effect.
