WHY Apprenticeship programs lead to good paying jobs. Under California law, public works projects require one apprentice for every five journeymen on the job. California has more than 65,000 apprentices but will need nearly 200,000 over the next 10-12 years. Thousands of highly skilled Baby Boom generation craftsmen are expected to retire over the next several years creating a shortage of workers in the skilled trades.
