TIPP to Hold Garment Industry Seminar February 22

SAN FRANCISCO -- California Labor Commissioner Roberta Mendonca today announced that the Targeted Industries Partnership Program (TIPP) will conduct a garment industry seminar on February 22, 1997 to help educate apparel contractors and manufacturers on requirements of state and federal labor laws. The seminar is free but seating is limited and the registration deadline is February 15, 1997.

"While TIPP receives much publicity on its enforcement efforts in the garment industry in Southern California, this seminar is part of our education efforts designed to help inform contractors and manufacturers of applicable regulations," said Mendonca. "This very important seminar will bring garment industry employers together to discuss the various requirements expected of the industry. As employers learn more about the various labor rules, the industry can anticipate improvement in labor law compliance."

The TIPP seminar will provide interpreters to simultaneously translate instruction into Spanish, Cantonese and Korean. Audience members will be provided headsets that will allow the relaying of information.

The seminar begins at 8 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles Hotel at Macy's Plaza, 711 South Hope Street. A 30-minute general session begins at 8:30 a.m. Concurrent workshops begin at 9 a.m. and will cover health and safety issues, wage and hour information, and licensing and registration. The workshops will be repeated at 11 a.m. so that participants can attend at least two of the breakout sessions.

The seminar will focus on key issues that TIPP inspectors have found to be the most commonly cited violations. They include health and safety laws; proper record keeping; the illegal payment of wages in cash without providing deduction statements to employees; and necessary information for licensing and state registration requirements.

A notice of the seminar has been sent to the 4,500 registered garment manufacturers in the Los Angeles area as well as the garment contractors associations. Registration can also be completed by calling the Los Angeles TIPP office at (213) 897-3231.

As with all aspects of the TIPP program, the seminar will be conducted under a joint effort by the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, and the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division. Additional support and education for the event will be provided by the California Employment Development Department, the Los Angeles County Health Department, and the Internal Revenue Service.

Note to foreign language media: For all foreign language media, the California Division of Labor Standards will provide TIPP spokespeople who are fluent in Spanish, Cantonese or Korean for any interviews to help publicize this important seminar.
