LOS ANGELES -- The Thai garment workers allegedly held captive and forced to work in an El Monte apartment complex for up to seven years, and others employed by the perpetrators, will finally have something that eluded them for far too long: A pay day.

The office of the California Labor Commissioner, having now overcome legal challenges in its effort to convert assets seized from the perpetrators into wages for the employees, has secured a total of $1.1 million payable to the workers.

Lloyd W. Aubry, Jr., director of the California Department of Industrial Relations, which led the operation that exposed the illegal manufacturing operation on August 2, 1995, will personally hand out pay checks to the garment workers and acknowledge the efforts of those who made this endeavor possible.
