Announces the 2010 Young Worker Leadership Academy in Northern California
OAKLAND -- The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) is pleased to announce that the annual Northern California Young Worker Leadership Academy will be held in Berkeley, January 28, 29, and 30, 2010 (for information on the Academy, see http://www.dir.ca.gov/Chswc/WOSHTEP/2009_YWLA_Flyer.pdf).
The Academy will provide a leadership development opportunity for teams of four high school students, with their adult sponsors, from different communities in Northern California to focus on young worker health and safety. The goals of the Academy are to:
The Young Worker Leadership Academy has been jointly developed by the University at California, Berkeley’s Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) and the University of California, Los Angeles’ Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program, in consultation with the California Center for Civic Participation, a national leader in the area of youth development and youth governance. The Academy is part of the statewide Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program (WOSHTEP) administered by CHSWC in the Department of Industrial Relations. The Academy receives additional funding from the California Wellness Foundation.
Academy sponsors include the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, a statewide task force made up of government agencies and other organizations that can play a role in protecting and educating California’s young workers.
CHSWC is charged with examining the health and safety and workers’ compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. The Commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers’ compensation system and of the state’s activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational illnesses and to examine those programs in other states.
