Speaker of Assembly John A. Pérez Appoints New Commissioner
OAKLAND —The Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) is pleased to announce that Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez has appointed Shelley Kessler to the Commission. Ms. Kessler is the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the San Mateo County Central Labor Council which represents 110 affiliated local unions and over 70,000 working member families. She has been at the Labor Council for 29 years, first as the political director and currently as the head of the organization. She has been a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for 32 years, as well as a Vice-President of the California State Labor Federation. She joined the boards of the Santa Clara Center for Occupational Safety and Health, Worksafe, and later the advisory board of the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Ms. Kessler represents workers.
CHSWC, created by the workers' compensation reform legislation of 1993, is charged with examining the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. CHSWC was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases and to examine those programs in other states.
