LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CORONER

Scope: To develop a video training tape on how to minimize the risks of occupational safety and health problems associated with the performance of a forensic autopsy and purchase noise-free pneumatic, reciprocating saws to eliminate airborne pathogens. Video will cover (1) proper use of disposable wearing apparel (2) proper identification, labeling, confinement, handling and communicating to others the potential hazards that exist when known or suspected communicable disease autopsies are performed and specimens are collected for analysis and (3) proper use of new autopsy saws.

Product: "Forensic Autopsy Safety Precautions" training video.


LOS ANGELES NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION

Scope: To develop a comprehensive training program for all newly indentured apprentices covering initial electrical awareness, eye protection, safe lifting procedures, Hazcom, housekeeping, head protection, hand-tool safety, ladder and scaffold safety, substance abuse education and others.

Product: Training manual and video entitled "Industry Awareness".


COMMERCIAL LUMBER AND PALLET COMPANY, INC.

Scope: To develop an Employee/Management Safety Committee; conduct a job hazard analysis survey and job hazard worksheets; update and translate safety training documents into Spanish; develop training videos in Spanish and English and implement enhanced training based on the bilingual training documents, supported by the bilingual videos.

CALIFORNIA LABOR FEDERATION

Scope: To create a team of ten county level trainers from the ten counties with the highest number of non-fatal disabling workplace injuries and four Spanish language trainers. These trainers, with the assistance of the project coordinator, will provide classes to specifically raise the competency of participating workers in hazard identification, reporting and recording with an effort to increase knowledge of construction hazards, toxic substances and ergonomics.

SAFEWAY, INC.

Scope: To create a safety training video directed at injury and illness prevention for butchers and meat cutters in retail trade establishments. Among other things, the video will cover heavy lifting, use of knives, machinery cleaning and adjustment, repetitive motion leading to wrist stress, bending and reaching, prolonged standing and work in a low-temperature environment. 2000 copies of the video will be duplicated and distributed to any requesting entity free of charge.

HILLVIEW ACRES CHILDREN'S HOME

Scope. To develop a series of teaching videos, educational materials and workbooks that present different topics associated with different dysfunctional behaviors as a means of educating and training social service employees who frequently face physical assault and other injuries by foster care children with dysfunctional backgrounds. Project will focus on such topics as: understanding the reasons behind the child's placement and reestablishing safe relationships; interactive play; understanding indirect behaviors; distance maintenance through anti-social behavior; interpretation of behavior and continuum of behavior.

Product: Video entitled "Child Care Worker Training" and workbook entitled "Relationship Impact Model".


UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER

Scope: To produce a broadcast quality videotape program that will present principles and techniques for preventing exposures to bloodborne and airborne pathogens. The video program will provide training for employees who would not ordinarily have had formal training in infectious disease transmission and are not direct healthcare providers, but who nonetheless, are at risk for such exposure. Target groups include employees in such hospital departments as Interpreting Services, Environmental Services, Dietary Services, Central Processing, Distribution, Patient Escort, Plant Operations and Maintenance and Social Services.

Product: Video entitled "Infection Control: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You" that provides education for lay hospital employees on the prevention of blood borne and airborne pathogen exposures.


INTERNATIONAL LADIES' GARMENT WORKERS' UNION

Scope: To train ILGWU members and others in the California apparel industry on hazard recognition and control in order to prevent injuries/illnesses. Special focus will be on working with employers and workers to improve conditions through labor-management health and safety committees. Problems to be addressed include repetitive strain injury, fire safety hazards, chemical exposures and stress-related health problems. Training sessions will be presented, as necessary, in English, Spanish and Chinese.

ATASCADERO STATE HOSPITAL

Scope: To implement a pilot program of advanced self-protection training for 400 staff who are constantly exposed to the risk of patient assault. Included in the program is a train-the trainer segment where staff will consult and develop a customized course with external self-defense consultants. A research study will be conducted, using a four group experimental design, which tests the effectiveness of the self-protection training program; identification and increased frequency of occurrence of critical safety behaviors; publication of program content, relevant findings and conclusions and outreach and consultation to similar interested facilities.

Status: Self-protection training video and manual for state hospital workers.


GREATER LOS ANGELES SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

Scope: To initiate an ergonomics study of the high risk tasks identified by a prior analysis and develop progressive learning training materials. The study will use proposed NIOSH recommended guidelines for manual lifting to help in defining the need to restructure high risk tasks and in determining the training required. Simultaneously, a study of the education, literacy and comprehension levels of personnel in the defined high risk tasks will be conducted to provide guidelines for the development of training methods and materials. A core study team will assist in the development of training programs, working with culturally-sensitive training professionals. Training materials will be developed and trainers will be identified and prepared to present and oversee the learning process. Appropriate personnel at each participating company will be trained to effectively use the training materials and communicate the program information.

FULLERTON JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

Scope: To implement "Project SAFE" (Stress Alleviation for Employees) which will include training to increase employee preparedness to deal with extreme behaviors or the confrontation with a weapon and development of written protocols for staff action in an emergency situation involving potential bodily harm. Training and education activities will include: learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of a potentially dangerous condition ad training in "verbal judo" to diffuse the situation; learning physical defense methods and the concept of "stages of crisis"; learning techniques and specific action steps to take when faced with a dangerous weapon or potentially dangerous situation; and learning methods of dealing with gangs and negative group behaviors.

SOUTH BAY AFL-CIO LABOR COUNCIL

Scope: To provide intensive worksite-based bilingual training and peer trainer education for the following targeted workers and to develop and support a program for workplace health and safety committees: pipe trades (plumbers, steamfitters, refrigeration and air condition fitters), butchers, public transit mechanics and drivers, hospital and convalescent home housekeeping work, industrial and janitorial and building maintenance work, retail clerking and clerical workers, hotel housekeeping, food preparation, gardening maintenance and laborers.

Product: Bilingual training pamphlets on AIDS & Hepatitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Back Safety and Chemical Awareness.


CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION

Scope: To train 80 rural Emergency Medical Services, fire and public safety personnel to identify exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials and how to manage and prevent exposure. Training will be conducted in conjunction with the American Red Cross/AIDS Education for the Emergency Workers.
