Commission Approves Additional Activities on California Health, Safety and Workers' Compensation
SAN FRANCISCO -- The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation (CHSWC) approved plans for additional research projects and activities at its public meeting on November 18, 1999 in San Francisco.
To promote California workplace health and safety, CHSWC will host a public forum in November 2000 to bring together workers, employers, government and all interested parties. The forum will provide the opportunity to discuss and share ideas in several important areas, including workplace injury prevention, a California workplace health and safety agenda for the new millenium, successful techniques and 'best practices' in facilitating return to work after workplace injury, and what employers can do 'before' and 'after' to minimize the impact of work injury or illness.
The Commission also took another step in its ongoing project to improve workers' compensation benefit notices. The project has identified the statutory requirements that cause the greatest problems with notices from the injured worker's perspective, and is now drafting proposed changes in laws and regulations to improve basic information for noninsured and newly injured workers and to improve information in benefit notices for injured workers.

The Commission, created by the workers' compensation reform legislation of 1993, is charged with overseeing the health and safety and workers' compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. The Commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers' compensation system and of the state's activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational diseases and to examine those programs in other states.
